Get more from TOML to YAML

TOML to YAML converts TOML to YAML. The conversion maps table-based configuration into YAML mappings, sequences, and scalar values. Comments and presentation style generally do not survive a data conversion. A YAML consumer can also interpret scalar values differently. Validate with the same YAML parser used by the receiving application, particularly around dates and boolean-looking strings. Use the worked example to understand what a successful result looks like, then compare it with a small sample of your own input. Keep the original available until you have checked the output in its destination. Conversion establishes a representation; it does not establish that the underlying information is correct or that the receiving application accepts every supported feature.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter or load TOML using the input controls. Begin with the worked example or a small sample for which you know the expected result.
  2. Review any available conversion options, then inspect the YAML result. Resolve a reported parse error at its source before attempting to reuse the output.
  3. Check the example below against your own data. Validate with the same YAML parser used by the receiving application, particularly around dates and boolean-looking strings.
  4. Copy or save the resulting YAML content using the controls provided, then validate it in the application or parser that will actually consume it.

A worked example

EXAMPLE INPUT
port = 3000
name = "demo"
RESULT / WHAT TO EXPECT
port: 3000
name: demo

Both formats express a mapping, but their punctuation and string quotation rules differ.

Preserve strings that look like other types

A quoted TOML value such as "false" is text, not a boolean. Its YAML representation must retain that meaning even if an unquoted display looks simpler. Test values resembling dates, numbers, and boolean words with the destination parser. Data conversion generally rebuilds the document from parsed values, so comments and the original arrangement of table declarations are not an appropriate round-trip expectation.

Tables become mappings

TOML uses table headings to place later assignments within a hierarchy; YAML commonly expresses that hierarchy through indentation. Verify a nested table and an array of tables after conversion. The visual layout changes, but each value should remain associated with the intended parent. Pay particular attention to date-like strings and explicit date values, since the YAML parser used by the destination can influence how unquoted scalars are interpreted.

When this tool is useful

  • Prepare YAML configuration from TOML while retaining a separate copy of the source.
  • Use a small example to troubleshoot mapping and scalar interpretation and identify a representation mismatch.
  • Create configuration examples for documentation without manually rewriting every field or symbol.

Tips for a better result

  • Comments and presentation style generally do not survive a data conversion. A YAML consumer can also interpret scalar values differently.
  • Validate with the same YAML parser used by the receiving application, particularly around dates and boolean-looking strings.
  • After changing formats, compare meaningful values rather than whitespace alone. Read the YAML output with its intended parser when exact types or escaping matter.

Frequently asked questions

Do table headings stay visible?

Their hierarchy becomes YAML mappings or sequences rather than retaining TOML table-header syntax.

Can scalar types change accidentally?

Ambiguous plain values can be interpreted differently by YAML consumers. Check strings that resemble dates, numbers, or booleans.

Can I expect identical comments and layout?

No. This is a data conversion, so source comments and table presentation may not survive.

What happens to the information I enter?

The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
