Get more from JSON to Go

JSON to Go converts JSON sample data to Go. The tool infers struct fields from the values and structure visible in a sample. Inference provides a useful starting point, but one sample cannot describe every valid future record. JSON field names and exported Go identifiers serve different purposes. Check struct tags, pointer use for missing values, and integer size. Include null values, empty collections, optional fields, and several representative records when reviewing the inferred structure. Compile or validate the generated draft in the target project. Use the worked example to understand what a successful result looks like, then compare it with a small sample of your own input. Keep the original available until you have checked the output in its destination. Conversion establishes a representation; it does not establish that the underlying information is correct or that the receiving application accepts every supported feature.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter or load JSON sample data using the input controls. Begin with the worked example or a small sample for which you know the expected result.
  2. Review any available conversion options, then inspect the Go result. Resolve a reported parse error at its source before attempting to reuse the output.
  3. Check the example below against your own data. Include null values, empty collections, optional fields, and several representative records when reviewing the inferred structure. Compile or validate the generated draft in the target project.
  4. Copy or save the resulting Go content using the controls provided, then validate it in the application or parser that will actually consume it.

A worked example

EXAMPLE INPUT
{"name":"Ada","score":10,"active":true}
RESULT / WHAT TO EXPECT
A struct with string Name, numeric Score, and bool Active fields

The example supplies a string, a number, and a boolean. These give the generator evidence for three different struct fields; exact names and formatting follow the tool options.

Zero values can hide missing data

After decoding into a non-pointer Go field, an absent numeric or boolean property can be difficult to distinguish from an explicitly supplied zero or false. That distinction matters when a response is partial or a field is optional. Review pointers or another presence-tracking approach where needed. Keep JSON tags consistent with the original contract even if Go field names are adjusted for readability.

Exported fields and JSON tags

Go’s exported struct fields begin with an uppercase letter, while JSON property names may use another spelling. Struct tags preserve that serialized name. Review pointer use when absence or null must be distinguished from a zero value such as 0, false, or an empty string. A generated struct that compiles can still lose that distinction during decoding. Include a missing-field example in the integration check, not just a fully populated object.

When this tool is useful

  • Prepare Go models for API responses while retaining a separate copy of the source.
  • Use a small example to troubleshoot field-type and nesting assumptions and identify a representation mismatch.
  • Create Go scaffolding for application code without manually rewriting every field or symbol.

Tips for a better result

  • JSON field names and exported Go identifiers serve different purposes. Check struct tags, pointer use for missing values, and integer size.
  • Include null values, empty collections, optional fields, and several representative records when reviewing the inferred structure. Compile or validate the generated draft in the target project.
  • After changing formats, compare meaningful values rather than whitespace alone. Read the Go output with its intended parser when exact types or escaping matter.

Frequently asked questions

Why are generated fields capitalized?

Exported Go struct fields use uppercase initial letters; JSON tags can retain the external names.

How do I distinguish missing from zero?

Review pointer fields or another explicit presence model where the contract requires that distinction.

Does an empty array reveal its element type?

No. Supply representative items and review the inferred collection type against the actual contract.

What happens to the information I enter?

The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
