Get more from Javascript Prettifier
JavaScript Prettifier formats JavaScript source into a layout that is easier to inspect and maintain. Readable indentation helps expose nested functions, objects, branches, and expressions, especially in compact code. It does not restore meaningful original variable names, comments, or architecture that were removed by a previous build or minification process. Code transformations are most useful when you know the language and the surrounding context of the snippet. Work from a saved copy and start with a small, valid example that demonstrates the behavior you need. Formatting, encoding, and generation do not establish that a program is correct. Review the output as source code, keep meaningful comments when appropriate, and test the result in the same environment that will eventually interpret it. This makes subtle changes much easier to spot.

How to use this tool
- Paste a small, representative snippet and keep a copy of the input. Include the punctuation and delimiters needed to make the example meaningful.
- Paste the JavaScript snippet, apply formatting, and review the resulting statement boundaries and nesting.
- Review the example below and compare its expected behavior with a small sample of your own input before continuing.
- Copy the result into a scratch file and verify it with the intended parser, editor, or test environment before replacing the original code.
SEE IT IN PRACTICE
A worked example
function add(a,b){return a+b;}A formatted function with an indented return statement
The function's structure becomes easier to read while its arithmetic expression should retain the same meaning.
Readable output is not recovered original source
A formatter can introduce indentation and line breaks around the code it receives, but it cannot generally recreate comments, meaningful names, or module structure removed during bundling and minification. Use the result as an inspection aid, and look for source maps or original source when a precise debugging relationship matters. The smallest useful sample includes the surrounding syntax needed to parse the construct, such as a full function rather than a fragment cut in the middle of an expression.
Verify syntax-sensitive boundaries
Strings, regular-expression literals, template literals, and line breaks around certain statements deserve targeted review. Do not execute unfamiliar JavaScript simply to decide whether the formatting worked. For code you maintain, compare tests and inspect any parser diagnostics after replacing a formatted file. A broad formatting change is easier to review when separated from logic edits because the remaining diff can be assessed for behavior. Keep the style consistent with the project's existing formatter if the result will become maintained source.
When this tool is useful
- Read a compact JavaScript fragment
- Prepare source for manual review
- Understand nested control flow during debugging
Tips for a better result
- Compare strings, comments, template literals, and semicolon-sensitive statements, then run relevant tests on code you intend to use.
- Separate a syntax check from a behavior check. A snippet can parse successfully while producing the wrong value, selecting the wrong element, or changing an important edge case.
- Keep the source and the settings used for this result together. That makes a later comparison or correction easier, especially when another person needs to reproduce the same outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Does readable formatting prove code is safe?
Formatting cannot prove that code is safe or correct. Unfamiliar input should be reviewed as text rather than executed just because it has become readable.
Can I use generated or transformed code immediately?
Treat the result as a draft to review. Check names, escaping, syntax, and assumptions in the target environment, then run a representative test. The tool cannot see the wider application or know every requirement that applies to it.
How do I investigate unexpected output?
Reduce the input to the smallest example that still shows the issue. Check the chosen language or mode, inspect special characters and whitespace, and compare with the original. Add complexity back gradually after the basic example works.
What happens to the information I enter?
The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
