Get more from CSS/JS Prettify & Minify

CSS/JS Prettify & Minify reformats stylesheet or JavaScript text for reading, or compacts it for a smaller textual representation. Prettifying adds layout that helps a person inspect structure. Minification reduces unnecessary formatting and may apply additional transformations depending on the selected processor. The appropriate mode depends on whether you are reviewing source or preparing an output asset. Code transformations are most useful when you know the language and the surrounding context of the snippet. Work from a saved copy and start with a small, valid example that demonstrates the behavior you need. Formatting, encoding, and generation do not establish that a program is correct. Review the output as source code, keep meaningful comments when appropriate, and test the result in the same environment that will eventually interpret it. This makes subtle changes much easier to spot.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste a small, representative snippet and keep a copy of the input. Include the punctuation and delimiters needed to make the example meaningful.
  2. Choose CSS or JavaScript and the prettify or minify operation, paste a valid snippet, and inspect the result.
  3. Review the example below and compare its expected behavior with a small sample of your own input before continuing.
  4. Copy the result into a scratch file and verify it with the intended parser, editor, or test environment before replacing the original code.

SEE IT IN PRACTICE

A worked example

EXAMPLE INPUT
CSS input: .card { color: red; } in minify mode
RESULT / WHAT TO EXPECT
A compact equivalent such as .card{color:red}

Whitespace around tokens can often be removed in this rule without changing its meaning, making it a useful initial check of the selected mode.

Formatting and optimization are different goals

Prettifying exposes structure through whitespace and layout. Minifying seeks a compact representation, sometimes using parser-aware transformations beyond simple whitespace changes. Keep the language mode correct and separate the human-maintained source from generated output. A smaller file is useful only if it retains the intended behavior in the target browser. Compare the result on a representative test rather than using a character-count reduction as the sole success measure, particularly when the snippet includes unusual syntax or embedded comments.

Sensitive syntax deserves targeted checks

JavaScript line breaks can interact with automatic semicolon insertion, while CSS values can contain strings, functions, custom properties, and whitespace with specific meaning. Comments can also carry build directives or license notices. Test those cases explicitly in any fragment you plan to replace. If the input is generated by another tool, preserve that upstream source and regenerate the compact artifact instead of treating the minified text as the only editable copy. This makes later debugging and reproducibility much easier.

When this tool is useful

  • Read compressed frontend code
  • Compact a small standalone asset
  • Compare readable and minified representations during debugging

Tips for a better result

  • Compare the rendered stylesheet or executed test behavior, and preserve a readable source copy for later maintenance.
  • Separate a syntax check from a behavior check. A snippet can parse successfully while producing the wrong value, selecting the wrong element, or changing an important edge case.
  • Keep the source and the settings used for this result together. That makes a later comparison or correction easier, especially when another person needs to reproduce the same outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Why not minify code by deleting whitespace?

JavaScript automatic semicolon insertion and CSS syntax details make blind whitespace removal unsafe. Use the correct parser mode and test the result.

Can I use generated or transformed code immediately?

Treat the result as a draft to review. Check names, escaping, syntax, and assumptions in the target environment, then run a representative test. The tool cannot see the wider application or know every requirement that applies to it.

How do I investigate unexpected output?

Reduce the input to the smallest example that still shows the issue. Check the chosen language or mode, inspect special characters and whitespace, and compare with the original. Add complexity back gradually after the basic example works.

What happens to the information I enter?

The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
