Get more from Css prettifier
CSS Prettifier reorganizes stylesheet text into a readable layout so selectors, declaration blocks, and property values are easier to inspect. It is useful for reviewing compressed rules or cleaning up a copied fragment before editing it. Formatting does not resolve selector conflicts, fix invalid properties, or determine how a rule interacts with the cascade and inherited styles. Code transformations are most useful when you know the language and the surrounding context of the snippet. Work from a saved copy and start with a small, valid example that demonstrates the behavior you need. Formatting, encoding, and generation do not establish that a program is correct. Review the output as source code, keep meaningful comments when appropriate, and test the result in the same environment that will eventually interpret it. This makes subtle changes much easier to spot.

How to use this tool
- Paste a small, representative snippet and keep a copy of the input. Include the punctuation and delimiters needed to make the example meaningful.
- Paste the stylesheet fragment, review the formatted blocks, and copy the readable result into your working source file.
- Review the example below and compare its expected behavior with a small sample of your own input before continuing.
- Copy the result into a scratch file and verify it with the intended parser, editor, or test environment before replacing the original code.

A worked example
.card{color:red;padding:1rem}A .card rule with color and padding on clearly indented lines
The layout changes for readability while the selector and declared values should retain the same meaning.
Readable rules help inspect the cascade
Indentation makes declarations and selector groups easier to inspect, but the final appearance also depends on specificity, source order, inheritance, layers, and other rules outside the pasted fragment. If a formatted declaration still does not apply, inspect computed styles in the actual page instead of repeatedly reformatting it. Keep related selectors and media-query context together when copying a sample, because removing context can make an otherwise valid rule appear ineffective.
Preserve meaningful content inside values
Quoted strings, URLs, custom-property values, and function arguments should be reviewed separately from indentation around braces. A formatter cannot infer that a custom property's token sequence will later be substituted into a particular property. Likewise, a comment can carry a note or tool directive that matters to maintainers. Compare these details with the source after formatting. A useful outcome is code that is easier to reason about while retaining the same selectors and values, not simply code with more line breaks.
When this tool is useful
- Read a minified stylesheet fragment
- Prepare CSS for a code review
- Make selector and declaration boundaries easier to follow
Tips for a better result
- Check that comments, selector groups, and nested constructs remain intact, then load the stylesheet in a representative page.
- Separate a syntax check from a behavior check. A snippet can parse successfully while producing the wrong value, selecting the wrong element, or changing an important edge case.
- Keep the source and the settings used for this result together. That makes a later comparison or correction easier, especially when another person needs to reproduce the same outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Can whitespace matter inside a stylesheet?
Whitespace can be meaningful inside values and selectors. Review strings, custom properties, and unusual syntax instead of assuming every formatting change is harmless.
Can I use generated or transformed code immediately?
Treat the result as a draft to review. Check names, escaping, syntax, and assumptions in the target environment, then run a representative test. The tool cannot see the wider application or know every requirement that applies to it.
How do I investigate unexpected output?
Reduce the input to the smallest example that still shows the issue. Check the chosen language or mode, inspect special characters and whitespace, and compare with the original. Add complexity back gradually after the basic example works.
What happens to the information I enter?
The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
