Get more from JSON to YAML converter

JSON to YAML converter converts JSON to YAML. JSON objects become YAML mappings and JSON arrays become YAML sequences, often reducing punctuation in configuration files. Strings that resemble dates, booleans, or numbers may require quotation to preserve their type across YAML parsers. Check indentation and quote ambiguous scalar values before using the output in an application. Use the worked example to understand what a successful result looks like, then compare it with a small sample of your own input. Keep the original available until you have checked the output in its destination. Conversion establishes a representation; it does not establish that the underlying information is correct or that the receiving application accepts every supported feature.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter or load JSON using the input controls. Begin with the worked example or a small sample for which you know the expected result.
  2. Review any available conversion options, then inspect the YAML result. Resolve a reported parse error at its source before attempting to reuse the output.
  3. Check the example below against your own data. Check indentation and quote ambiguous scalar values before using the output in an application.
  4. Copy or save the resulting YAML content using the controls provided, then validate it in the application or parser that will actually consume it.

SEE IT IN PRACTICE

A worked example

EXAMPLE INPUT
{"name":"Ada","enabled":true}
RESULT / WHAT TO EXPECT
name: Ada
enabled: true

The name is text and enabled is a boolean in both representations. Indentation conveys nesting in YAML.

Objects and arrays become mappings and sequences

The object {"users":[{"name":"Ada"}]} contains a named list of records. In block-style YAML, users becomes a mapping key and each list item uses a sequence marker. Check that the name remains under its list item rather than becoming a sibling of users. Indentation makes the result readable but also carries structural meaning, so avoid manually realigning it without understanding the tree.

Keep scalar types stable

JSON explicitly distinguishes a string from a number or boolean. YAML can express the same distinction, but plain-looking text may be interpreted by a parser. Check strings such as "0012", "false", and a date-looking value after conversion. Quotation is not merely decoration in these cases. Test the generated YAML with the parser used by the destination application, especially when exchanging configuration between tools that use different YAML versions.

When this tool is useful

  • Prepare YAML configuration from JSON while retaining a separate copy of the source.
  • Use a small example to troubleshoot nested mappings and sequences and identify a representation mismatch.
  • Create readable examples from API data without manually rewriting every field or symbol.

Tips for a better result

  • Strings that resemble dates, booleans, or numbers may require quotation to preserve their type across YAML parsers.
  • Check indentation and quote ambiguous scalar values before using the output in an application.
  • After changing formats, compare meaningful values rather than whitespace alone. Read the YAML output with its intended parser when exact types or escaping matter.

Frequently asked questions

Are YAML quotes only decoration?

No. Quoting can preserve a string that would otherwise resemble a number, boolean, or date.

What happens to a JSON array?

It maps to a YAML sequence. Check its indentation and parent mapping in the output.

Will another YAML parser read the same values?

Usually for ordinary data, but parser versions and scalar rules can differ. Verify ambiguous values with the destination parser.

What happens to the information I enter?

The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
