Get more from Citation Generator

Citation Generator assembles a draft bibliographic entry from author fields, a title, publisher, publication year, an optional URL, and an APA, MLA, or Vancouver style selection. The citation updates as the fields change. It does not search for a source, verify publication details, transform a document, or ensure compliance with a particular institution's style edition. Author handling needs special attention in this version: the form's Last name, First name label does not match the parser's first-name-then-last-name assignment. Inspect the generated surname and initials against the actual source rather than trusting the label alone. Use the tool as a formatting draft and confirm every bibliographic fact before submission.

Guide updated October 13, 2026

How to use this tool

  1. Add the author entries and fill Title, Publisher, and Publication year. Those fields are required for the form to produce a citation rather than its fill-in reminder.
  2. Add a URL if relevant and choose APA, MLA, or Vancouver from Citation style.
  3. Inspect Generated citation, particularly author surnames and initials. For the source-verified Vancouver example below, the current parser requires Ada, Lovelace despite the displayed author-order label.
  4. Copy the reviewed citation using the output control, then check formatting and required details against the exact style guidance used by your course, journal, or organization.

A worked example

EXAMPLE INPUT
Author field: Ada, Lovelace
Title: Example Book
Publisher: Example Press
Year: 2026
Style: Vancouver
URL: empty
RESULT / WHAT TO EXPECT
Lovelace A. Example Book. Example Press; 2026.

This is a fictional formatting example. The implementation treats the text before the comma as first name and the text after it as last name. Check the result carefully because the visible author label currently describes the opposite order.

Bibliographic identity comes before formatting

The same work can have several editions, translations, or publication formats. Identify the specific version you used before copying its title and publication details into the form. Author order is part of that record and should not be rearranged casually. If a source requires information the workspace does not collect, such as a journal volume, issue, page range, editor, or chapter title, complete the reference through an appropriate manual or source-specific workflow rather than forcing it into an incomplete book-like entry.

Review the draft in its final document

Citation styles can distinguish capitalization, punctuation, emphasis, and ordering in ways that a plain copied string does not fully communicate. Check the output after pasting into the bibliography and apply the destination document's required presentation. A correct reference-list entry is also separate from an in-text citation or note, which this form does not assemble as a complete document system. Keep the original source details alongside the draft so corrections can be made without trying to infer missing facts from the formatted result.

When this tool is useful

  • Draft a simple book-style bibliography entry
  • Compare the supported citation-style outputs
  • Review supplied source details before inserting a reference

Tips for a better result

  • Confirm names, title, publisher, year, edition, and other required details from the actual source; the generator does not verify them.
  • Check author order and surname placement in the output. Multiple given names, compound surnames, organizations, and suffixes can require manual handling.
  • The form does not offer fields for every source type or style requirement. Do not assume a journal article, chapter, or unusual publication is fully represented by these few fields.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the author appear in the wrong order?

This version's author label and parsing assignment disagree. The code assigns the first comma-separated part to first name and the second to last name. Inspect the final citation and correct it against the source instead of assuming the label guarantees the intended order.

Which citation styles are available?

The selector offers APA, MLA, and Vancouver. There is no separate style-edition selector, so verify the generated draft against the edition or local requirements that apply to your work.

Can the generator confirm that a source exists?

No. It formats the values entered in the form. A polished-looking entry can still contain an invented title, incorrect year, wrong author, or missing publication information. Use the actual source as the evidence for those facts.

What happens to the information I enter?

The utility processes your input in this browser. Some tools retain field values in browser storage or the URL; avoid entering secrets in shareable fields. Page and asset requests still go to the hosting provider. Read the privacy and offline-use notes for details.
